He was known as one of the Four Great Masters of the Ming. Wen specialized in all the major script types, but his small standard and running scripts were the most unique. His style reached back to Chin and T’ang models, and his small standard script comes from his study of Wang Hsi-chih’s The Huang-t’ing Classic and The Yueh-i Essay to create a warm, mature manner with a slanted brush and sharp beginning and ending strokes. This work was done at 40 and already reveals the ease and spirit within its solidity. His style foretells the refreshing and pure qualities of “Ming standard” beyond precision.
